What is a Teleprompter and How to Use It?

For an editor, MC, or event organizer the teleprompter is probably not something too strange. But do you really understand what it is and how it works? If not, then do not leave your eyes to see what is a teleprompter and its usages through the article below.

What is a teleprompter?

A teleprompter is a mechanism that displays reminders or lines of speech by electronic text display for speakers. It is often placed under the camera to avoid appearing in the video or audiences’ view but is still visible to the speaker. It is extremely helpful when the MC or speakers need to read the lines from the script or the content is too hard to memorize. This can help the MC speak fluently in front of the camera and audiences without having to hold a paper or learn by heart the script.

How does it work?

The speakers have to look directly at the camera or viewers in the real stage and can not look away when speaking. Therefore, it is important that the lines are displayed clearly so they can easily read. A flat-display is placed horizontally below the camera so that the text will not appear in the video record. A mirror is placed at an angle of 45° to it so that the text displayed on the screen is reflected. And the camera is placed above the mirror. By this way, the speaker will see text when looking at the camera. Their only remaining task is to simply read the lines out.

How to use it?

Before you start recording or speeching, it is important for you to familiarize yourself with the teleprompter. When you want to move to the next part of your speech, to read the next paragraph or sentence, there will be software to help you do this. Try to practice to make your speaking perfect. The best way is to use your natural tone and speed of speech or you can also imagine yourself talking to your friends and colleagues when standing in front of the camera. Maybe in the script, there are some words that you don't feel natural about when you speak, so boldly replace them, do not just follow everything on the screen that will help you have a smooth and confident speech.

Customize the teleprompter to your liking. You can choose the background color, foreground color, font size, and font type for you to read it most clearly. It will be awkward if you use unfamiliar settings and have to strain your eyes to better read what is being displayed. And the camera will record all the attitude and expression on your face.

The last one is not a technical note, but it is very important. Smile and use body language. If you are rigid and just read the lines in a monotonous way, that will be easy to realize that you are depending on the script. Thus, give your viewers smiles, it will help them more comfortably. Although body language takes practice time, pay attention to it to break the boredom in your videos.

The bottom line

This is some information, what is a teleprompter and how to use it. Proactively apply the tips above in a flexible way to produce newsletters, quality videos. Are you still wondering about a supplier with full equipment to cater to your upcoming projects? Where to rent a teleprompter? If so, please contact VietnamEvent to receive the best deals and quality service.
